What’s Happening at Newquay
STARS UNITE AT THE MELBOURNE STAR
The Melbourne Star Observation Wheel lit up the city’s skyline in red, white and blue from dusk on 1st July to celebrate Les Misérables opening night. The Melbourne Star has attracted more than 150,000 visitors since opening on December 23, 2013 and is open daily from 10am to 10pm, with last admission at 9.30pm.
WINTER FIREWORKS
Weekends started with a bang during July and August, with FREE Friday night fireworks at Docklands presented by City of Melbourne. This annual winter event is perfect for the family with views of the fireworks from the waterfront restaurants or bars, and plenty of entertainment along NewQuay Promenade.
JUBILATION AT NEWQUAY
Jubilation is a Christmas event that celebrates the season of generosity and coincides with what is often the start of the Victorian bushfire season. The event will raise funds for the Country Fire Authority as a way for city goers to give-back to their ‘country-cousins’. Event to be held from Friday 12 to Sunday 14 December 2014.
MELBOURNE REGATTA
Docklands is symbolic of Melbourne’s maritime heritage. On Sunday 30th August 1835 settlers on the tall ship schooner Enterprize first arrived in Melbourne. To commemorate the first landing Docklands will celebrate Melbourne Day on Saturday 30th August. The Melbourne Regatta and Blessing of the Fleet presided over by Father Bob Maguire at noon (12pm), and the Schooner Enterprize performing a re-enactment of the first landing will commemorate Melbourne’s maritime heritage.
This is a great family day for all visitors to Docklands. Come and be part of the action that includes street entertainment, music, food and a flotilla of vessels bringing Victoria Harbour alive.
MONUMENT PARK ON NEWQUAY PROMENADE
Monument Park is a revitalisation project that seeks to turn an existing concrete plaza in NewQuay, into a high quality public space of real distinction, that provides an engaging place for locals and visitors to meet, play, sit and linger. Monument Park has been designed in collaboration with MAB, internationally renowned artist Callum Morton, award winning McBride Charles Ryan and Oculus Landscape Architects. The project is supported by the City of Melbourne and is being funded by MAB & Places Victoria and represents a large investment in the beautification of NewQuay.
Works on Monument Park are well underway with onsite demolition works complete. Majority of the sculptures have been completed off-site and are scheduled to be installed throughout August and September. The construction of Monument Park remains on schedule with completion anticipated towards the end of 2014.
