HarbourOne in NewQuay passes 1,000 apartment milestone

The Lord Mayor of Melbourne Cr Robert Doyle today (Wed 16 June 2010) launched construction of MAB Corporation’s $180 million, 22-level HarbourOne (H1) tower in NewQuay, Docklands.

H1 went to the market in late 2008, just months before the GFC, and is now 100% sold.

MAB Corporation Managing Director Mr Andrew Buxton said H1 was a milestone in the development of the 24-hour-styled Docklands village precinct as it brings total apartment numbers to 1039 in the past 10 years.

He said 2010 marks a decade since MAB Corporation first began construction at NewQuay and the sale of the first apartment in the Arkley tower.

Mr Buxton said the Eastern Precinct of NewQuay will be completed in 2012-2014 with more than $1 billion invested in the lifestyle and entertainment precinct to date. There is currently more than $300 million of construction underway to add to that total.

He said NewQuay is now Docklands’ most successful integrated precinct boasting restaurants, shops and offices and attracts 1.5 million visitors a year.

Mr Buxton said H1 has views to Victoria Harbour, the city and north to the docks, and includes a retail ground floor section.

He said buyers purchased 310 apartments and 10 studio offices with 400 residents to move in late 2011 boosting the NewQuay population from 1500 to almost 2000 people.

Aimed at the entry point of the Docklands market – the top price was $980,000 with an average price of around $550,000 and an entry of $320,000 – the building has appealed to young professional First Home Buyers, investors and owner-occupiers.

Designed by Plus Architecture, the development is in the heart of the NewQuay and is due to be completed in December 2011.

Featuring a striking ‘ribbon’ detail which spirals and curls around the slender tower to form an architectural wave effect, H1’s unusual offerings include a ground level, exclusive ‘library lounge’ open to residents and guests for leisure and entertaining, along with an audio visual lounge with large screen plasma and internet access.

H1 will conform to the VicUrban “Award of Merit” to ensure the building meets the latest passive and active ESD features.

The start of H1’s construction is another milestone for MAB Corporation which began the visionary creation of a dynamic Docklands centre in 1996. Plus Architecture was formed in 1997 to masterplan and design NewQuay, which is now renowned for its residential, retail and cultural offerings, including stand-out restaurants and bars.

As MAB’s $1 billion flagship project, the vision was based on creating a 24-hour city suited to living, working and play. Today, NewQuay is home to over 1500 residents and over 1000 workers, a figure which will swell to over 4000 residents and over 5000 workers when the precinct is completed.

Earlier this year, MAB Corporation also launched its Quay Park Townhouses which have sold out. At the most exclusive end of the market, it has also created the Marina Residences development with luxury, high-end three-level residences, each residence enjoying their own private marina berth.

All the MAB Corporation developments at NewQuay will enjoy stunning views, direct city access and a residential foothold within this increasingly dramatic and lively city village precinct.
