Development plan approval will transform NewQuay
Approval of a development plan for a large, landscaped public park and a hotel promises to transform NewQuay in Melbourne’s Docklands.
Plans submitted by MAB Corporation were approved by the Minister for Planning Matthew Guy as part of a new focus on people and community in Docklands.
The approval means that 5,000 square metres of land, which is currently privately owned by MAB Corporation, will be developed into a new park and transferred to the City of Melbourne for community use. The park will be one of the largest green open spaces in Docklands.
The plans include a hotel overlooking the harbour, four residential towers and the establishment of a north-facing park which is equivalent in size to approximately 20 tennis courts.
MAB’s vision is for a pavilion-style café within the park and a large area will be devoted to community events such as live performances, exhibitions and markets.
MAB Corporation Chief Operating Officer David Hall said NewQuay was one of the first projects approved as part of the Second Decade of the Docklands development phase, which was all about people.
“NewQuay will revitalise business and the community by attracting more visitors, more workers and permanent residents to the area,” Mr Hall said. “The park will be one of the largest green open spaces in Docklands and by establishing it behind the new hotel; the area will be shielded from southerly winds.
“MAB’s vision is to transform NewQuay into a tree-lined grassed area and ensure it is a safe and relaxed new public space for Docklands’ residents and visitors to enjoy.”
The approval of the development plan follows 18 months of planning and consultation with the community, Places Victoria, the Department of Planning and Community Development and the City of Melbourne.
“MAB has developed a plan which revitalises a hard and uninviting space,” Mr Hall said. “This includes areas for public events, more green open spaces and a diverse range of architecture.
“We want to ensure NewQuay is a visual landmark for Docklands and a new community hub.”
